Ryokans are generally not on the net nor do their owners speak much English. But, contrary to popular opinion it is possible to stay in Japan for a reasonable price. You can self cater meals quite easily by purchasing ready made sushi and other dishes at local supermarkets and if you arrive after 5pm they will be discounted, and the locals know it! There is also a very good hostel (Tour Club) in the centre where you can have your own room with bathroom if you wish, but you must book well in advance.
