Yunnan
So many things were destroyed in China during the cultural revolution that there are now only two cities worthy of World Heritage Listing. One of those Lijiang, in Yunnan a short distance from Bangkok. This seems to be place where the Chinese come to see examples of their own historic architecture. The Old Town of Lijiang is 3.8 square kms and cars are restricted, and life is very relaxed. this is a stronghold of several ethnic minority groups, notable the Bai and the Naxi, who use the only hieroglyphic language still in use today.
Nearby is Baisha, a small village, where you can also stay in a guesthouse and arrange ecotours with Zhao Fan for local areas or further afield to Tibet and Guilin. These guided tours are definitely only for very small groups who want something personalised. You can also volunteer to work in the area around Lijiang, Yunnan.
